R I P little Kaetchen (keetie) unfortunately it was a long time ago ,(almost 40 yrs); a very careless breeder , a large vet bill and euthanasia at 6 mths due to an unhealed fractured shoulder due to a bite when a baby , and very bad HD ..a lot of pain , and no bright future. And the abbreviation is just as sweet. I'm so sorry your family only shared months of her life. But she would've been so much loved. As much as it breaks our hearts when they go too soon.... to the dog it's quality of life that counts. And your family made sure she had that. I have miniature Schnauzers and the first boy we owned, his breeder told me that my boy's mother was best friends with a rottie that belonged to her showdog friend. He was also very gentle with the mini puppies. The other side of this tale. My cousin who also has a mini Schnauzer was walking his dog on lead when a tradesman working on a building site and had his Rottie running loose rushed and attacked the mini culminating in extensive vet care. juice Posted July 13, 2013 Share Posted July 13, 2013 Carter is awesome, I used to be very wary of Rottie's until I met Reddogs two,and had the pleasure of walking them while he was recovering from surgery, now I love them. I don't like certain dogs, probably based on nothing more than a bad experience, looks or something, i'm sure if we were all honest we would agree, dogmad just says it :laugh: Sorry I was MIA, I was in the states, so can confirm, yes, she does love my bully Bon. Fully intact his whole life and not an aggressive bone in his body - even when picked on by other intact male dogs... How about gentle Rotties that are good with kitties. :D This is my gorgeous girl Emma, not a single mean bone in her body, the sweetest soul in the whole world. She was so gentle we used her as a barrier to keep kitty behind the baby gate when we first fostered kitty, Emma of course did a terrible job and let kitty out, we found them snuggling together after. They were best friends since day 1 and lived in harmony together for 2 years, everywhere Emma went, kitty followed her around. Santo66 Posted July 14, 2013 Share Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Carter is a 3 year old, desexed male Rottweiler whom I love dearly. We socialised him early and he has a lovely temperament - no problems interacting with humans or dogs, but recently we noticed a change. When taking him to the local dog park he started chasing a Pug and had to be pulled away, the lady was a little upset and I explained Carter had never done that before. Last week we went to another dog park (we go there every week) and he had another go at a Pug! Today I took him to the park and he started again on a little Chihuahua. From observing he approaches the little dogs for a sniff but the little dogs react to him and he reacts back, he runs around chasing them and tries to bit them (softly as he has never drawn blood) but he never growls. He is very obedient but it seems when we are at the dog park he gets distracted and doesn't respond to voice commands - he also isn't motivated by food so is proving tricky to train. I want to do some training with him to change this so does anyone have advice? When a dog doesn't respond to known commands in distractions is because the dog finds more value in the distraction than he/she does in the handler......it's better fun to chase another dog than return to the handler and behave which can be trained out with motivation and reward that is, from foundation training with handler providing reward of something highly desirable to the dog for the right behaviour, or aversion which is fear of non compliance or a combination of both......having said that though, maintain good handler focus through distractions depends on a dog's genetic drive, the higher the drive, the easier a dog is to train in obedience through distractions. Food is no good for prey drive satisfaction......chasing balls and retrieves and playing tug is the best way to motivate driven dogs to train handler value and focus :D A Rotty is a guardian breed, not meaning he is looking for trouble, but he may finish some trouble like putting another dog in it's place for getting snippy.......perhaps not politically correct but breed correct not to take crap from a strange animal or person is part of a good working dog character and isn't a bad thing quite the opposite, but with guardian breeds we need to be mindful of defence drives especially with small dogs which doesn't take much of a doggy correction from a big dog to hurt a small dog........I wouldn't let him run off leash with small dogs is asking for trouble I think given what you are describing, keep the little dogs safe and your lovely boy out of trouble :) Edited July 14, 2013 by Santo66 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
