Lucinda is getting thinner too..and it is around the eyes and face that it really shows. She has also lost a lot of muscle around the hindquarters. But otherwise is fine in herself. Staffyluv Posted November 9, 2006 Author Share Posted November 9, 2006 Blood work is in No major changes since last time just an elevated creatinine level - that the vet thinks may be due to some tumours in his kidneys. He also thinks that Ollie is have a lot of histamine releases that is why he is vomiting so much more. We are taking him off the zantac and changing him to maxor (Omprazole), another gastro type drug that should settle his tummy down a bit. We knew this was going to happen - that he would need stronger and stronger drugs to fight the symptoms of what is going on. I give him jalna yoghurt every day to help his tummy as well as try to keep his food as plain as possible (usually just chicken and veges now)... He might get red meat once a month these days if he is lucky. He is pretty well and always puts on a show when visitors come around - most people do not even realise he is sick. Funny thing is, as soon as everyone leaves he usually goes to sleep because he is so worn out from socialising... I don't have any new pics on the PC at the moment - I will have to take some more... Staffyluv Posted November 10, 2006 Author Share Posted November 10, 2006 The new meds are great - he only started them on Wednesday night and already he is only vomiting once or twice a day... It is not really vomiting - to me that is when their stomach contracts and the food is forced up... Ollies is more of a regurgitation - he drinks too much water and it is like his tummy is too full and it just comes up - not forced up... He must be feeling better because he wanted to run a bit on his walk this morning - which he has not done for a while now... The vet is convinced that he is on a downward run though - his face has hollowed out a lot and he is losing weight, even without me watching what he eats (just between us - me watching what he eats went out the window a long time ago... I maintain that he is here for a good time, not a long time - so he can have what he wants)... I've been thinking of good ol' Ollie dog over the last few days or so ..... given my recent forced 2 month spell from DOL (major computer crash) I was almost not game to ask! So pleased to hear Ollie is still enjoying life and holding his own. Was thinking about Lucinda too, DBS. Give them both my good tidings, wish them well and deliver the cuddle I send them both. Staffyluv Posted November 17, 2006 Author Share Posted November 17, 2006 We (the vet and I) have been trying to stop the vomiting for Ollie but even the stronger meds are not really working. The vet called this afternoon and I have to take him off the Macrolone (anti cancer drug). I am going to give him Mylanta a couple of times a day and some maxalon and if this does not work the vet has suggested that as his quality of life is not as good as it could be (because he always seems to feel sick - he spends a lot of the time licking and swallowing what he regurgitates) it may be almost time to give him his wings... Is he in pain? - I don't know, he does not seem to be... Maybe he is, maybe his stomach is sore from the spread of the cancer - do I have an ultrasound done to confirm if there are further tumours (other than the ones we know about?) The last tests came back that the cancer was not active (that will change as soon as we stop the Macrolone)... His tummy problems are getting worse, I know - but not bad enough to give him his wings yet... (I don't think so anyway)... It was so hard to hear that... It is the first time he has said it... And it scared me to death - reality is so hard to deal with sometimes... Apart from regurgitating water (he rarely brings up food) and the licking and swallowing, he still loves his walks and was playing footy with me in the lounge room this afternoon... Where do you draw the line... How do I say goodbye when he seems mostly OK to me (and everyone else that sees him). He is always bouncy when people come to visit. He still wants to play and go for walks - am I just kidding myself? Just a vent guys, no need to answer - I just wanted to write it down because sometimes it makes it clearer... schnauzer Posted November 17, 2006 Share Posted November 17, 2006 Hi Staffyluv, I have been done this road a few times now and I know just what a hard time it is for you and your family. I would definitely get an ultrasound done and then you will know what you are dealing with. We did an ultrasound with one of mine who had cancer (at the bridge now), and it showed cancer in his lungs and liver. My vet (an oncologist) told me to just give him quality of life and I would know when the time was right. He told me that when he started vomitting after each meal, it would be his time. Lucinda is having itchy problems..have just started her on Loratadine twice daily to try to settle things down. She too is most likely at the same stage that Ollie is..I can see the bend in the road that we travel together, that place where she will travel without me until we meet up again. As for when..well the only thing I know for sure is that both Ollie and Lucinda will let us knopw in no uncertain terms when they are ready...cant say how but when you get that look you cant miss it. Could it really work this fast? Does any one know if macrolone is supposed to be reduced or can it just be stopped? I have had some conflicting advice and was curious. TIA... This lad continues to amaze me... He is sleeping near my feet at the moment and looks so peaceful. No obvious signs of tummy problems, like cramp contractions or the 'smells' that he has been producing lately... He is still a little flat but has been eating a little today, which was a nice surprise as he has been so particular with what he wants to eat the last couple of weeks - much fussier than usual... Thanks again to you all for the wonderful support and advice that you continue to give us as we continue to fight this horrible disease. Hug him for me please. macrolone should be reduced slowly over a longish period of time. missing one tablet will not have any advers effect but stopping cold turkey is not at alll good. From what I can dredge up from m y rusty memory... Lucinda was reduced to macrolone every second day, the tyhe dose was halved etc. But dont rely on that info...ask your vet how to wean Ollie off it. Funny how picky they can be. Lucinda inspect each and every morsel of food. those that dont pass muster get flicked across the yard with disdain. Jodie Hi Jodie, I am a new member to this site and have just had a read of your long journey with Ollie. What everyone has said is for sure correct, you'll know when the timing is right. As a huge animal lover myself i dred the thought of that same day approaching but when the time is right i think its also easier to deal with cause you know its the best and right thing to do at the time. Stay strong for him cause animals can sense every feeling we have! Hope he's feeling even better than today tomorrow and continue's to be smiling on the inside for you! Hugs for you both!
