  1. Depends on what the smell is Minis don't have an odour as such so its depends on whether its there ears, feet or the stuff your bathing in or even the food
  2. Your pup is being normal . This is a scenario we often inform puppies owners with older dogs but many seem to think it wont happen. You need to cater for to ages & an older dog that has lived a quiet pup free life Buy a puppy pen so your pup can happily amuse it self not in a time out fashion but in a fashion it can be a pup & act its age . You need to also cater for the older the dog & give it a safe area . You can yell till the cows come home but pup needs to be educated & you need to give the pup the time & effort it wants & needs you need to become its playmate & also teach pup independence to play on its own as the scenario isn't going to change Chi will get older & the cavie pup simply thinks it has a playmate
  3. Some coats never return after clipping & if you want to YOU MUST put in alot of work & generally the dog was clipped off in the first place as owners didnt want to hand strip to start with. We hand strip all breeds but generally we end up suggesting the owners clip as they don't do any work in between & we can only do so much in two hrs & over doing it in that time frame can irritate the skin . Slick & easy stones are the best to work on the coats ,i stripped the coats whilst in the bath wet to get alot more out . Mars can be a useful tool but used incorrectly can also cut coats so care must be taken . You can buy a nit comb from the chemist which will get alot of coat out too . The key is you must do it a few times a week to get a coat back & that is all areas not just the easy bits . Some coats just never come back & we will tel owners that despite there efforts they won't get what they want
  4. Jed i don't agree with your comments about patience .As a groomer i am very patient as are most in the profession & grooming is all about handling & making the experience good. A novice person can teach worse habits & instil more panic than good . The dog needs direction & yes the owner can do alot to help but if there not confident with clippers/scissors & technique then the whole confidence package can be doomed before they start . Good handling is all about knowing when to try harder & when to take a step back but also understanding your tools & above all how to multi task with two hands & a dog that doesn't co operate so all parties survive safely. We groom dogs where novices started out & most are nightmares because the owners had no clue & the dogs where given no direction & retraining them takes enormous patience . Most elderly dogs when groomed are more feral than any abused dog especially when there hearing & eye sight goes . Its unfortunate that many seem to feel groomers are non feeling people our industry copes alot from people who think our job is easy & not worth what we charge or the time & effort we put in.
  5. People do it all the time take dogs leave them unattended to go shopping Personally i think these people are irresponsible idiots without any thought to there dogs & break the obvious rule of having there dogs under effective control .
  6. There is no set time . We have had bicthes we mated at day 3 to day 30 each one is different so its important not to follow the general rule but treat each bitch differently
  7. Keep in mind this is also a social day out for the owners whilst we all enjoy talking we also make our dogshow days a social gathering amongst friends so keep this in mind when talking with people don't over stay your welcome . Don't over do the complimenting especially if you really don't have much clue about what your talking about . I guess the main thing is what you want to discuss . We generally suggest people go to shows to see the breeds, get contact details from those people they like & then phone breeders to discuss things more personal . For me there are things we discuss at shows & things we don't so maybe let us now what questions you are hoping to ask .
  8. Personally i would be getting him done more often 7 months is along time for a dog that has issues especially if the coat has knots ,clipping knots still hurts & dogs don't forget. He doesn't have to be clipped short but done regularly can be maintained at a length suitable for all parties but to be honest even in winter i would just go shortish with a dog that has such issues . Thicker coats depending on what clippers people use can often take longer to get through .we use double k which power through heavy coats in no time A good groomer depending on the coat could do alot of scissoring where possible . The most important thing is groom on a table with a non slip matt a neural area from play to cuddles. Just placing the dog up in this area daily for quick cuddles can do alot ,rubbing your hands over & then on the ground . One thing i will say is i think sedated dogs seem worse than if left ,i think the panic of being out of control worries them badly . We did a rescue Std Poodle they insisted on sedating not only was it a nightmare to get the dog to stand it panicked so much ,did some more the next day normal & a different dog. Finding the right groomer can make a massive difference one who understands fair but educational & again is often a more comforting person than the owners who tend to panic more, Not sure if you have used clippers yourself but if you haven't i would suggest learning on a stable dog before you attempt yourself as your handling could set the dog back
  9. I have no issues reporting providing all facts are stated . To often even on here you here people whinging this happened to my dog should i report it but they have forgotten to post the most obvious part that there actions caused the issue to happen but there dog came off second best . There is often two sides to every story but if its a true case of an issue then yes it should be reported for the dogs safety & others . But i do have to say many people just don't think around dogs & that is scary. I have spent two days at the royal show & even though i have a sign saying i am friendly but please ask before patting many people simply feel that doesn't apply to them & just do what they want with no thought of what there actions may create but be the first to point the finger .
  10. Nothing sounds abnormal except the hives & like mentioned the beef would be the first to go .Did they use the same vaccine as already on the card or something different brand wise ??(the vet should have placed the sticky sticker on with all the details for such cases. Also agree the breeder should be consulted ,if a good one they will be a wealth of knowledge . Many of the BB people here use witch hazel for wiping the folds
  11. Just put a sheet on the set most dogs don't accept wearing undies as they don't fit or stay on well . We have never used them we just cover the sets & put up with it
  12. we had a client who boarded there dog after the same issue . In there case it wasn't there dog barking but it was the only way to prove the point & the council in this case was aware the dog was in kennels. This may be an option to see if they still complain whilst the dog isn't there . The OP may not wish to debark but in most cases that is the only option unless people wish to move or retrain & put in alot of effort . It seems in the case the council is on the OP side so they are lucky but reality is many people don't think there dogs bark alot & we also have own up to the noise & dealing with the issue . You could also set up CCCTV to watch the dog & see it barking . You can simply all go out for the day & sit outside & listen for a few hrs
  13. Personally i would be worrying less about commands but working more in ensuring the dogs mental map of the house is set in stone, using carpet runners to advice where spots are ,ensuring finding water bowls . Having owned blind dogs there scenting is so important & there main means of solution solving ,its important he learn all about the scents whilst the vision is still there . His nose is his form of braille & in my experience my guys that went blind early also got hearing issues earlier . Our youngest girl that went blind could walk our acre for many years because she used her nose whilst her vision was partially there & new where the carpet runners lead her to & what where safe areas .It really is important to put the time into this now especially with a young dog
  14. Personally i would never have placed my face so close when the dog has been wearing a muzzle & with a strange handler . I think there is blame on both sides but certainly the gentleman needs to be more aware that his dog is reactive & the muzzle can make dogs feel more vulnerable at the best of times
  15. We have always followed the belief that there is a time where the bad outweighs the good & that it is kinder to PTS . Obviously this is different for each person
  16. Many vets now suggest Zyrtec(sp) .
  17. I have actually been to that place in 97 not surprised i saw good & bad . I also saw the puppies in pet shops but the xport laws where different back then
  18. In Sydney you can do a lap & leave if you wish . This is actually a scenario you dread when you win the breed with a puppy & why sometimes puppy BOB winners don't return especially if from the east
  19. Advertising is an avenue to the public Selecting the right owners is a whole different package. I have often read DOLERS post i wouldn't buy from someone who advertises in the paper & when asked why can't give a decent answer but the sad part is if that person tells other people its like a bad case of "chinese whispers" & people then presume other sources are better guaranteed . i wouldn't even guarantee some of the DOL breeders but its a good avenue like any other advertising site As for emails so many of our inquiries go to the junk folder because there email addresses are so odd the anti virus kicks in. We get atleast 10 emails a week with Do you have pups. There is no name attached no nothing . Many emails sent are very specific & require time for the answer . We have also experienced sending emails back only for there account to be full & it bounce back, infact this happens alot . Some people also want a response that day & it just doesn't happen. Breeders do have lives there life isn't selling puppies & sitting at the computer 24/7. My personal fav is people that leave phone messages & you can't understand there message so can't phone them back as its a private number or you recall the number called & its work & no one nows who you are after . Then you get the family members who are all emailing but haven't told each other & in the end each one gives a different story & you have no clue who is who & what is ligit Its not easy either way The olden days where so much better people phoned you discussed what they where after & could talk about the breed & both parties get a good feel of each other luckily we get alot more phone inquiries than emails & can assist in other breeders or even other breeds if the breed in question isn't the right fit
  20. Personally in your caes i would flying over to meet breeders & seeing there dogs . I wouldn't go to all that expense for a "one off" & hope the price tag meet my expectations . The only other way i would consider is if i had someone very offay in the breed & new what i was after to look on my behalf
  21. Personally for a rare breed i would be flying to one of there National shows to decide if its a breed i want & what the future plan is . Are you wanting to breed? Do you want a show dog only ?? Then i would be looking at the kennels that could be of great assistance for a future plan or at the very least be great mentors from a distance. We have imported & lets just say we got sent a lemon so it buyer beware . As for breed reconigition this is the hard part because if they decline which they can you have a "pet". If you bring out a mature dog the process doesn't happen quickly could be a year or more before its accepted so age of the import is something to factor with acceptance
  22. Welshies are calmer/softer Springers can be a tad obsessive of there owners but like many breeds its training. "spring" is a key word for Springers they love bouncing up & down ,active & social. Working /show lines can vary as to the ease of living like any working gundog & the planned owners . Our neighbours have both & i groom alot of Springers ,i prefer the more "out there" nature of the Springer but the Welsh are lovely dogs
