Is Danny's diagnose still hiatus hernia and oesophagitis resulting from the stomach acid escaping into his esophagus? If so, then I imagine he has pain on bad days which would stop him from eating. If he eats something that doesn't agree with him he will suffer from indigestion and the resulting acid leaking up into his esophagus will cause him more pain. It's a very difficult time for you DDD, but if he was mine I would be keeping a diary of what he is eating and then whether or not he is willing to eat again a few hours later. Small meals often is what the doctor tells humans. Unfortunately Danny can't tell us whether or not what he ate upset him. Hopefully this will resolve soon. -

I've had a great experience with them. According to their webpage they are not answering emails until 5 January 2015. -

What Food Can Your Dog Not Resist?
jemappelle replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just had another thought. I had an old blind dog that would pull her head back when I put her food bowl down. The vet said that her sense of smell was stronger to compensate for loss of sight. So I always fed her on a flat plate so that the smell would dissipate easily and she ate a lot better. Clutching at straws, I know! -

I had an old dog who wouldn't eat. I gave her Chunkers from the supermarket - she loved them. Not the best food I know, but she ate them for months! -
I've had two barking complaints from Council at two different houses. I used to be a teacher so after the long Christmas holidays the dogs would be very unhappy when I returned to work and would carry on when I left and then when I arrived home. I used to drive around the block and then wait down the street to see how long they were barking for. And on other days I would sneak home early and sit quietly in the house to see what was happening. I was so stressed so can empathise with you. I found that really ignoring the dogs whenever they wanted attention worked. Really the basics of NILIF. Lots of attention is given but only when the dogs are happily sitting off by themselves somewhere. Now I'm not working the dogs still go outside in the morning and then if I am home for the day I bring them back in about lunch time. Then I usually let them out again after a few hours until they are fed (only fed when they are quiet and settled) and then they come back in. If I'm distracted and forget to let them in they bark to let me know, but I ignore that until they are quiet again before bringing them in. They also used to follow me everywhere - I would turn around and fall over a dog! This has now stopped and the dogs are much more relaxed and so am I!

Could it be a hot spot?

When I first moved in here I had a lot of problems with rats in the roof. The lady I bought the house from had two compost heaps in the yard which I think attracted them. I tried the Racumin but they wouldn't touch it so I have gone more heavy duty now. Touch wood, I'm finally on top of it but have 5 pet-friendly bait stations in the yard and get the roof baited yearly (was 3 monthly). Last time he came he said there were still a lot of baits up there which is good news!

In the contacts on my mobile phone I have under ICE (in case of emergency) my next of kin contact and he has the particulars of the boarding kennel and pet sitter I use.

Shakey Older Dog Needs Help Please
jemappelle replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My old cattle dog had this in a front leg. The vet diagnosed arthritis and arthritis treatment resolved it (course of cartrophen). -
I've tried something similar a few years ago. My dogs stopped, cocked their heads, then kept barking!

I'm using them but did find a tick on a dog last year. I'm sure I read somewhere that it doesn't stop the tick attaching but kills it when it does. The "no smell" is great!

I just wanted to say he is so cute! And I shouldn't have looked because now I want one! And a puppy fence is great to keep the dogs contained and let the kitten run. They will then get used to him and hopefully leave him alone until he is bigger and can stick up for himself a bit.

Laser Treatment For Dogs
jemappelle replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It's used a lot on horses and greyhounds so my vet tells me. I have a cat with a back problem and she has had it. My vet said he doesn't know if it works so he didn't charge me. I can't say it made any difference to her. -
Anbody Ever Had A Dog With A Broken Toe?
jemappelle replied to DesertDobes's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
4 times! Do you know how he did it? I have no idea what my dog did but I think maybe he got his toe stuck in a deck chair. My dog has a splint at the moment while I decided what to do- its not a cast just vet wrap and strapping over some padding and the splint, is that what you mean? Looks like what my boy had but I think his might have been longer. And he broke them chasing balls on dry hard ground - cattle dogs play hard and keep playing, even when injured. So it wasn't until we got home each time and he had cooled down, that I discovered there was a problem! -

My cattle dog has had broken toes on 4 occasions. He wore a special bandage that was longer than his leg so that he couldn't weight bear (I forget the name) and rest. -
Be careful using Permoxin if you have cats as it is toxic to them. What area/suburbs are people find the ticks bad? My poor dogs only get walked on the edge of the road this time of year (very quiet area)!

In Case You Think I Am Telling Porkies . . . . .
jemappelle replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with Pie, it does seem like a lot of food for small, old dogs. However if your keen for them to eat you can borrow one of mine as they are always starving and will set a good example! -
I'm in the Jervis Bay area and a friend had one on her last week. It was a seed tick (first stage of paralysis tick) so only tiny but it was still a tick!
