Jack Russells Out Of Control
juice replied to xxshanexx's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Premier dog training , craig murray (not the one in brissy ).check them on FB , were very helpful to me and a little more relevant to pet owners .) -
My neighbor has a Cav and Cocker. They got the Cav first, said he was easy to train, calm, never heard any barking. When he was a few months old they went back to petshop and bought a Cocker pup. The Cocker barks allday,( i complained to them as it was just driving us nuts) apparently trashes the place is a nightmare to walk as he barks at everything. i know they are both petshops dogs but the difference is huge in the breeds,( they are moving soon, so wont have to listen to it allday anymore!)

Alot of rescues do this, they have to save dogs who are about to die over others who can be helped. Some will allow you to put the dogs up on their page as a private adoption. Other than that get him to list them on gumtree etc, but make sure they are desexed or someone will spot them a breeders , and do home checks etc. Staffs are the most common dogs dumped so there are tons out there looking for homes.

I don't think labs make very good deterants. Rottie, Bull Terrier? My cattle isn't interested in chooks, great guard dog too.

I have a Tibetan Mastiff at the end of my street, Boston the other end, and met a Westie for the first time a couple of days ago, owned by a fellow pommy ( scouser to be precise!) , what a tough little dog they are, gave my BT a piece of his mind

I would be putting his food down and if its still there after 10 mins take it away till next feed time. Also changing his food all the time is just pandering to him and may upset his tum too. What was the breeder feeding? any reason you cant feed raw now?

Things Breeders Look For In Potential Owners
juice replied to Jellyblush's topic in General Dog Discussion
welcome back! I have found breeders a nightmare to get a response from and both times i ended up getting advice on who to contact from dolers ( one who didn't even breed my breed, but knew who to try! ).Which is hard as i like a certain type and getting no reply is frustrating. Asking here is the best start, it gets your foot in the door. gawd knows how members of the public get a purebred if my experiences are anything to go on. -

Packer is stunning, so glad he found his spot. ( even if it wasn't here) At least he came back quickly and not much later with all your hard work undone, good result in the end. -

Just to point out whaling hasn't stopped, check out the Japanese in the southern ocean and the savages of the faro's islands for a start.

Actually as far as aggression goes i wonder if its because in my experience entire dogs tend to get attacked by neutured ones .So whilst they may not be aggressive watch for this. I think its a personal thing based on breed , coat plays a part for you, i cant be doing with all the hassle that goes with entire dogs so choose not to have any.

As she probably doesn't have long left i would just not rehome her and let her live her life as she is, as long as steps are in place where she can't get an an unsuspecting person. Still no one is addressing other dogs that have been there years without being advertised, are they too unrehomeable? I'm sure i read somewhere about the wolfie girl being dodgy?

Terriers are inclined to chase cats so be careful, and i'm not sure a beagle would run, don't they walk with their nose to the ground? I used to walk one, hated it most frustrating walks ever  I think a gun dog might be a good fit too, lots to choose from. GSP?

NOOOOO, i can answer yes to all the criteria you just said, thats even worse  But really timing is wrong, my old cattle dog Ozzie is in heart failure, on meds , but upping his dosage every few weeks as he goes back down, so its not right to pull in another dog just yet. Although Zelda the crazy bully would love a new play buddy now that i have her under control and stopped being breed blind and letting her run the roost! -
No idea why you are hand feeding him, of course he is going to grab it, he has no idea how much he is getting and when the offer is going to stop, how stressful for him. i agree , put his food in a bowl and give him some space to eat it so he knows its not going away.

Only just saw this, sits on hands  But seriously, only a pet home here, but work from home, and confirmed crazy dog lady, one day perhaps. :D -
The problem is your wants list is conflicting, and i'm not sure there is a dog that fits it all. Bigger dogs for protection looking are not going to live as long or be as good at agilty. Agilty type breeds are not going be particularly protective. How about a nice well bred cattle dog? otherwise you might have to decide which way you prefer to go.

So they have been trying to up their game and should be given more time? By doing what exactly? Building posher looking kennels? Again i ask, how do you police live baiting, ingrained cruelty thats been going on donkeys years? Answer? How do you improve on 70% of dogs culled? Doping? Come on, lets hear some answers, if they have been getting their act together.
-
Have you considered a gun dog? Wei or Vizla might fit the bill, maybe more inclined to have an off button. I rarely recommend my old breed , but a dally?
-
I was very surprised by the ban, i too thought they would just be stricter guidelines. But in all honesty when you have a governing body not prepared to step up and stop cruel practices that they know go on where do you go from there? Trainers who lie on tv about where their dogs go, and when their partner is banned for doping etc. Really, how can you trust any of them? And how the hell do you stop live baiting, on the basis most properties are rural ? Thats before you even tackle the 70% of dogs bred that are culled. I havn't heard any answers to these questions.
-
sorry, he meant the racing bodies turned a blind eye, and should have acted.
-
I just spent an hour chatting to my neighbour who used to race about the issue. Although he is now out of it, he is gutted, but feels the governing bodies are to blame for turning a blind eye. When i mentioned the trainer on tv last night ( and his banned wife), he said if their names were on a race list you knew you had no chance against their dogs , it wasn't a level playing field. I also believe part of the report showed that even after the practices were brought to light last year live baiting still continued. I don't think the other states will follow.
