I have been doing the same thing Snook with Stella only we don't attend classes etc yet as you know. Dogs the I am familiar with in our area & their temp. is ok we say a Hi & Bye , off we go. If we encounter a dog that I don't know we continue walking past without stopping. She is coping miles better than before doing this as there is no time for her to size the other dog up or to start to get too anxious. Now I am finding we can pass other dogs in the street without a second glance most times where as before she would start reacting the moment she saw them approaching. I will do a detour though if I am unsure of the dog in question. IMO best to avoid a possible negitive situation at this stage if her progress. Just had to edit to add that I praise, praise praise her & jackpot treat her when we have good meetings. Funny thing now is when a dog is approaching that we know Stella stops & sits & looks straight at me waiting for a treat. Smart little food driven girl

Excellent post nowstarin . Thanks for all valuable information. I started using Frontline many years ago but didn't find it very effective in my war against ticks & quickly swapped to Advantix with great results. As both my 2 dogs are daily swimmers. You are right, sometimes cheaper isn't always better.

Well said Snook..... A reactive dog is NOT abnormal..... Nor bad. I certainly wouldn't expect any reactive dog to be a social butterfly & meet & greet every dog but on very random, 3 second meets I think it could work.

Corvus yes I agree re Thundershirt. With my girl it seems to help her not to reach the extreme heights of anxiety. I sometimes don't explain myself very well. If I haven't got her TS on & I can see she is getting anxious I will wrap my arms /hands around her girth quite firmly till I feel her breathing slow down & she exhales. Know this sounds weird but have found this does help at times. -

So good to hear everyone is having such success of late I'm wrapped for you all. It is a wonderful feeling when you have success no matter how small or big. Snook, Hankdog Staffyluv...Well done guys Teekay, I thought you handled that terrible situation very well. Don't be too hard on yourself OK. You did your best in a very stressful position for the both of you. It isn't easy I understand. Sometimes I just come home in tears with my girl as well Feeling like a complete failure. But sometimes things happen that are completely out of your control & you just have to think fast & get the hell out of there. Which you did. Keep up the great work :) Panzor, Screaming with fear?? is that what you mean or frustration. Stella cries with anxiety/fear at times when we are walking on leash but she doesn't do it as much now. When she was young you could her 2 blocks away It was awfully upsetting. I think maturity & meds have helped her out lots. My boy screams at me when I am teaching him something new out of frustration I think. Sometimes it makes it hard to train him cause he chucks such a tanti if he doesn't get it first off. He screams & barks at me. Staffntoller, I have found the Thundershirt to work really well for Stella when we are out & about. She is a very nervous/ noise reactive girl. I have her wear it in stressful situations & I can certainly see a less fearful girl -
" What's going on over there??" OMG he has grown so big so fast!!!! He's awesome FM

Dog Collars, I Can't Find The One I Want!
BC Crazy replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh Staffyluv, I'm surprised as I thought that water would completely ruin the leather. The collars my 2 have are made out of wet suit material type stuff so they dry really quickly as well. I would love to buy my guys a leather collar though for when we go on outings, just so they look real pretty :p The one Zig has so suits him, looks awesome -
When Stella & I make it to some form of group training, & we will one day, the 3 second rule would really suit us. Marvellous idea IMHO. On lead I find she handles quick "hello's" pretty well now as long as it is brief & we move on.

Gee, beautiful gear & another vote for Ruthless. Awesome gear if in the market for leather. I love leather but it just wouldn't suit my guys as they are daily salt water swimmers. We go Ezydog or Blackdog for collars & leashes. They are very well made, don't get ruined in the water, quick drying & don't rust :) -
Giggle Aussie 3 :) I can just see my 2 guys in one of those very cute little numbers. Sonny would probably love it & Stella would have hers ripped off her head & in a million pieces in 2 seconds flat LOL.

No not busy at all Lisey. We were there late August last year & there was only one other family there :) Maybe we were just lucky, I don't know.

We love Tailwagger's Rain Forest Retreat in the Gold Coast Hinterland at Tweed Heads. Beautiful green rolling hills, great accommodation. Just glorious... Don't forget your tick collars etc though. The only down side to such a magnificent spot. Makes me want to go again just talking about it

Dogmad, your the best !!! I think you do an amazing selfless job & I just wanted to express my gratitude. It's people like you that restore my faith in humanity :) All dogs want is to be loved & shown kindness. Whether they are 6 months old or 16. The way they respond & bounce back after sometimes years of neglect & abuse never ceases to astound me as they have every right to be as pi**ed off as hell at the world & the everyone in it. Instead they soak up all the loving they can get & rightly deserve. That's one of the many reasons why I adore them. -
So sorry.... poor little Gracie. Agree L Gifts, bloody shitty original owners Yet another innocent puppy has to suffer... Run free now sweet girl
-
Poor baby girl. All paws crossed here for her & sending lots of healing thoughts her way. Good luck with her.

Yes from me too. Most people are sh#t. How anyone could give away a beautiful oldie or any dog for that matter is bloody way beyond me & down right heartless IMHO -

Oh smooches ear muffs look great. Glad they seem to be helping. Good luck with her. Beautiful dog.. Will have to get some for Stella. Smooch doesn't mind wearing them? Does she try & get them off? -
My girl does this quite often as well. Of a night when we are all watching TV or something you'll here a hell of a commotion at the back door & it will be Stella trying to get a huge tree branch through the door opening, which she does & puts it down in the middle of the lounge room to chew it to bits. great !! LOL. Thats if I don't catch her first & put it back outside, much to her dissapointment. Should see the 'look' I get... Giggle.

Great news ... So happy for all concerned :D

Such a very sad story. I feel so sorry for the elderly poodle, & it's family, tragic As for the offending dog's owner & their lack of compassion, pathetic & shameful....
