Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
BC Crazy replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I will have to catch up on this thread as I have been away camping. Just caught the Adaptil thing & I have tried the spray & collar but it made no difference to my girl. Had to give it a try though. The Thunder Shirt has been really great though. -
Have been following this thread closely. So glad I read your post Nekhbet. I was wondering if I was doing the right thing when my girl sees another girl that I know she reacts to. I found myself standing there at the end of the leash while Stella went off her nut, lunging & barking etc doing nothing, being like a tree if I hadn't seen her "enermy" approaching. If I do we usually play LAT with her favourite food,(which is anything) but sometimes her emotional state escalates so quickly that food just doesn't cut it. So I get out her ball & just hold it in front of me.I then have total silence & I have her totally focusing on that ball in a sit position, facing me, back to the other dog, till the dog has walked out of my sight. I let Stella off lead & throw her ball for a game of fetch for a reward, then back on her lead. It seems to be working a treat for us. But I must stay ONE step ahead of her at all times otherwise the moment is lost & the commotion begins Stella is very obedient on lead usually, doesn't pull at all & does everything that is asked of her, sits at kerb e.t.c. Also very good with most approaching things, bikes, scooters e.t.c but if a female canine of similar size rushes at her or runs past she will become very reactive. Lunging, barking & growling. I am continuing to use these methods in the hope of changing this unwanted behaviour.

Anothet vote for the Thunder Shirt. Works wonders on my reactive/anxious girl as long as I put it on before she has become nervous. Amazing results. Lessons her stress levels dramatically on most occassions :)
-
Take it & apply it when due. Yes it is water fast but don't use shampoo on him for 48 hours after application. Enjoy your camping trip :)

I think the other & most important aspect to a co-ownership type deal is that of the dog. Is he comfortable, happy & well adjusted with being handled by 2 people. You'd have to pick one with a very balanced, sound temprement.
-
I was wondering how successful co-ownership would be too. I would love a third dog down the track a bit but don't know if I could cope with a extra dog full time. Would love a show dog. Suppose it would just depend on each individual instance & the surrounding circumstances.

My desexed girl tends to do this when she is excited, like after I have just finished a game of tugs with her but she doesn't do it to me, she just humps the air for a few seconds. I know it is really weird but I just ignore it as she is not actually doing it at or on anything. I think it is just excitment. She is a very highly strung girl.

Congratulations ! Well done to both of you. Bet your thrilled paptacular & rightly so :)

..and The Dog Sat On The Tuckerbox .........
BC Crazy replied to persephone's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Nice persephone, funny aren't they when they are so interested in what we are doing. My boy is like that, as soon as I start doing something especially if I am looking in a cupboard for something his head is always right beside mine looking in :) -
Because when I pay for my groceries, I don't want a free serve of bullshit. Love it GM & totally agree :)
-
I didn't click on this either at first because I too was worried it might be about something really gross & if I looked at it I would be up half the night with a distressing image in my head. LOL LOL.

Which Food For Border Collie Pup?
BC Crazy replied to Horsegal98's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Welcome to the wonderful world of Border Collie ownership Horsegal 98 :) Would love to see your new arrival when you get a moment. I had my boy on Black Hawk for a while but his coat was lacking its luster so I switched him over to Taste of the Wild grain free dry food & his over all conditon improved dramatically in a short space of time. I also give him Barf Big Dog Kangaroo. You don't have to feed very much TOTW, Sonny only has 3/4 of a cup per day & 100 grams BBD. Naturally all dogs are different & what works for one may not for another, also quanities will vary from dog to dog depending on how active they are, etc etc. All I did was lots of reading on this forum & alike, found my top 3 picks of dry food & got samples of each to try & monitored him closely, then stuck with the one I thought he did best on. I also have my younger girl on the same diet & she is doing equally well. Enjoy your new baby, I am all puppy clucky now :) Edited to add that I add variety with very small amounts of things like sardines, cheese, boiled veg, natural yoghurt . -
Sorry JoAnn P I can't help you with that as I have no idea either. Am able to post & start new thread & thats about it. Not very computer savvy unfortunately.

Oh, thats a sham. I thought is was a good idea.

Anyone Boarded At Doggy Farm Stay Middle Dural?
BC Crazy replied to JoAnnP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dear all - thanks for your kind thoughts. Yes I made the stupid mistake of my life and will carry the overwhelming guilt forever. Two toddlers, a ridiculously busy job and not enough time to think straight. a crushing reality to live with, especially with a three year old who constantly asks when jack is coming home. And my other three dogs who were seriously depressed for some months after. FYI, I have learned - dog kennels are effectively unregulated - 'self regulated' via the Companion Animals Act in NSW - locals councils have NO interest in the running of kennels other than land use zoning/permission So no one has responsibility. Outrageous, huh! No wonder puppy farms can flourish in this country where animal welfare laws don't exist. FYI I lodged a complaint with Hills Shire. They 1. Never formally interviewed me despite contacting them many many times 2. Said they didn't need to speak to me because 'I was overseas and by definition was not a witness to the event' 3. Concluded that there was nothing to be done because 'no one witnessed the event' 4. Sent the owner of the business an application so they could apply for approval to operate kennels!!!!!! So two dangerous staffies are out there running around and their poor owners probably don't know that their own beloved dogs need to be carefully managed. I feel sorry for them. As I said to council, if these dogs did this to my harmless and unprovocative little jack, they could do it to a child. I believe what goes around comes around. This person has it coming big time. Take life slowly, friends. Don't blame yourself, you left your dog there in good faith, as many people do with boarding facilities all over th eplace. You expect to get all your dogs back but if something goes wrong you expect to be informed as soon as they possibly can and you expect to the dog to recieve appropriate treatment as soon as is possible. I know you will blame yourself it is human nature, but the blame falls squarely on the boarding kennels shoulders not yours. It is also terrible they have not been held accountable. RIP Little man + 1 In total agreeance with you O So Swift. Well said & very true. -
If so, No Go for us then.

Puppy sniffer, your post is really touching & getting your second dog was obviously meant to be, fate has brought you your heart dog :) I got my 2nd purely for me. I had room in my life & my heart for another. I certainly got alot more 2nd dog than I had planned for. My girl is very complex. So as I have always believed, "you don't always get the dog you want, you get the dog you need". I think Stella was sent to make me learn more & hopefully become a much better handler. She has already taught me lots. I thought I kinda knew what I was doing before she arrived, Ha, I was so very wrong LOL. The main worry for me was my first boy & them getting along & that hopefully Sonny may even enjoy her company & not feel 'put out' with her being around. I couldn't have wished for a better result as it just warms my heart to watch Sonny now he has just blossomed since Stella has joined us They play together all the time, defend each other when need be & Sonny has taught her the ropes around here very well. So as much as it is harder in many ways raising & caring for 2 dogs & it is. For me it has been very rewarding thus far :)

Oh thanks OGenie, I would love to hear how your guys go. Mine have never stayed anywhere & still have huge reservations about boarding them. We wil see. I am on the hospital waiting list so it could be up to 12 month wait, just not sure how long. Thats the hard part I think as well. Thanks for your kind thoughts :)
-
Just googled Akuna Odin Genie, it looks great. Love the fact that your dogs don't mix with others. They will feed your food. They get vet checked. You can select all different types of stays & levels of exercise etc. all apparnently with in their 10 acre property. Would love to hear how your guys go as I have to be hospitalised & will have a 6 week rehab,of doing nothing so looking for options for maybe a 2 week stay. It is worrying finding somewhere that will care for our loved ones in a similar way to the way we do.

Anyone Boarded At Doggy Farm Stay Middle Dural?
BC Crazy replied to JoAnnP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Another horrifically sad incident dancinbc's Poor BC pup She was only there overnight. Such a shame. I don't know why people would think it a good idea to have their dog stay in a place where all these strange dogs ran together. Is it just the romantic notion that they are all going to be 'friends' & play together or something I too hate the idea of locking up my dogs but much prefer it to them being injured or worse. I have to be hospitalised within the next year & will be out of action for 6 weeks so I was thinking of boarding mine for 1 to 2 weeks just to get me over the initial first part of recovery. I just don't know if I trust anyone enough to look after them & then you here all the horror stories about kennels. Makes me more than a little worried. I certainly wouldn't put mine in a place where they were mixing with any other dogs apart from each other. I think I too would look for someone who is very breed savvy & with lots of experience. -

Anyone Boarded At Doggy Farm Stay Middle Dural?
BC Crazy replied to JoAnnP's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have been thinking abut this tragic incident since I first read about it at 5 am this morning. What sort of establishment is this?? I had a quick look at their web page & I too have red flags flying everywhere. All sounds just lovely NOT. Dogs of all shapes & sizes running free around the place. Eating bones all together e.t.c With little supervision either by the sound of things Definitely a recipe for disaster IMHO. Surely someone has to be held accountable for this negligence, no matter what was signed or what wasn't. An horrifically sad situation for Jack, dingbat & family. A very preventable one if this 'boarding' place had professional, educated & trained staff.
