The problem re Pit Bulls is complicated. I am not for banning breeds. But since Pit Bulls have been effectively banned for a while now, and you can't own or breed them publicly in many places in Australia, you do have to question those that are being bred. We have all met dogs with poor genetic temperaments due to breeding, which can have issues such as aggression, reactivity, low tolerance etc and IMO this is more likely with a type that does tend to fall into the wrong hands and which does not have legtimacy and can't be bred openly - so is not bred for working or show type, and possibly not bred for good temperament.

Anyone who doubts that is can work should Google "Calgary" and "pitbull"... the results speak for themselves.

Yes.

Also the US Veterinary Association's Task Force on dog attacks. All variables were weighed up & they say the answer to public safety concerns is not banning breeds.

Evidence is strong that the root of potential problems is in the variables that you quoted before. So that's where preventative action should be taken.

Best run-down I've heard, was from a Victorian Rottie breeder (registered) talking on Radio National. The subject was the work of the Pet Therapy team from Dogs Vic. But when she mentioned that her therapy dog (& others, too) is a Rottie, the interviewer nearly fell off his chair in surprise. Rottie = Child Killer was beneath his question of how could that breed work with children & vulnerable elderly people. The breeder gave a succinct statement about decisions for breeding, raising puppies to be socialised and managing & maintaining good socialisation & training in adult dogs. Would apply to any dog.

The Rottie Club of Victoria has this kind of excellent information on their website.

Does anyone here have the statistics of breeds in Australia that have bitten or mauled people? I'm having a "discussion" with someone at the moment who says all PB should be PTS, I say most of these dogs are crossbred mongrels of unknown parentage and a lot of rangers have no idea what a PB even looks like. Would like to be able to tell him that such and such a breed is more likely to bite then a PB but all I can find it statistics in America.

Why dont you concentrate on explaining what irresponsible dog ownership is rather than breeds that bite? Anything with teeth can bite.

Anyone else watching?

"Pittys should be destroyed", "pits are as dangerous as a lion", "get rid of them all"

"Ban them, they are awful things"

Here we go again :(

I know what happened to that little girl was a shocking horrible thing (thats why i started a new thread) , but when are people going to start looking at the owners and not the breeds? :(

Unfortunately, it IS the breed. They have been bred to fight over many, many years. It is imprinted into their genetics in the same way Retrievers were bred to fetch their masters' ducks, etc when hunting. No one, and I don't care how much of an expert they claim to be, but no one can control these dogs and stop them from attacking when they want to.

They were bred to fight other DOGS not humans, human aggression has never been a trait of the breed. It is the morons that desire to own an aggressive dog that are signing the death sentence for this breed, not the dogs.

And sorry, Dunnwarren - i didnt mean to sound like a smart ass. I'm just really upset about that little girl, as we all are.

That's ok Im upset too and I don't own the breed and probably never would but it just annoys me that the breed gets blamed when I would guess all of them are cross bred mongrels,,, I cannot even begin to understand what the parents are going through right now,,, RIP little girl,,

In addition to those who are concerned about the pure pit bulls getting a bad rap- i am concerned about my cross bred mongrels attracting the pit bull label.. Surely we can't get into a situation where any dog that some random person deems to be a pit bull can be seized and destroyed. I sure hope not.

That's already happening has been for quite some time :(

Has it been happening to dogs sitting in their backyard though? I know of situations in VIC with impounded dogs or dogs who have been reported. Does anyone know if it is already the case in VIC that a dog can be seen, reported, seized and destroyed without any containment violation or report of attack?

Bans can be effective. Dog fighting was banned in England in the 1890s. This didn't end dog fighting, but it sure cut down the amount of it going on. Dog carts were banned shortly thereafter. Sadly, this seems to have all but ended the use of dogs as cart animals. Living in the US, I envy places where there are strict gun laws. Lifting a drug ban generally results in an increase in the use of the drug.

But if what you want to get rid of aggressive neighbourhood dogs, banning the APBT is a pretty backassward way of going about it . . . for reasons elaborated by many above. (In a nutshell, too much harm to the good guys to try and prevent a few bad guys from being bad . . . and many/most of the bad guys will evade regulations anyway).

Everyone seems to go on and on about how pit bulls were bred for fighting, but nobody ever seems to mention that pit bulls were also bred as nanny dogs... as reliable companions to children. :( I sincerely hope the breed won't be banned and this incident won't cause a knee-jerk reaction from the public to ban all large breed dogs. First pit bulls, next will be the Rotties, Staffies and GSDs, mark my words.

This tragic incident should really highlight how much more education the Australian public needs regarding responsible dog ownership, unfortunately it seems that lately calling for bans seems to be the easy way out that most people take these days.

I am not going to state my opinion about any particular breed here. What i will mention is yet another aspect to this tragic event & subsequent media frenzy....... No doubt there will be a surge in the number of dumped & surrendered bull & mastiff type dogs and a reduction in the adoptions of bull & mastiff type dogs as people (especially parents most likely) get a bit nervous or swayed or pressured into such decisions.

Good - don't need this breed of dog. It's certaiinly not what one would class a "family" dog. It's a fighting dog.

Thats a horrible thing to say. I mentioned in a previous post yesterday, i helped save a male pitty who belonged to four boys. That dog IS the safest dog they own out of 5. They can be perfect family pets! :mad

further update in the news - the amnesty on registering pit bulls will be rescinded as soon as it can be arranged, which means any unregistered ones are therefore deemed illegal and will be able to be seized and destroyed without any recourse available

wow! your narrow mindedness and lack of common sense astounds me! please...do us all a favour, and read this article, then tell me why banning them would be any different now?

My link

but really...read it...please...educate yourself, then at least attempt to have an intelligent argument????? :mad :mad :mad

Does anyone know who the Brad guy that was on this morning is? Had a bit to say about training and owners needing to do the right thing - all while sitting with his bull breed dog licking his face
