Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
BC Crazy replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Panzer :) We are making some progress. Very slow & steady, but progress. Lucky I'm not the 'give up' type -
Poor boy How very frightening for him. I do hope he is going to be OK both physically & mentally after such a thing. I didn't see anything last night on the news. Must have been doing something. Hope his dog is all right but it is a worry if they didn't mention anything of him Right in front of the school with the poor littely's to witness such horror.

Training In Newcastle/lake Macquarie Area?
BC Crazy replied to thowra's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for that Dave. I might come by one Sunday & check it out minus my dog ay first. She is very reactive at times so am unsure whether a class atmosphere would suit here & it may not be suitable for the other dogs there as she would distract everyone if she decides to throw a wobbly. -
Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread

Well done Staffyluv !! Yes 2 hours is a long time for some dogs. Stella gets 'over it' in about 10 minutes max. & your right always finish with them wanting more. I train her at home though as she would not settle in a group class. Maybe one day. This thread is great isn't it. So much to learn. Good luck with Ziggy & keep us posted on his progress :) -
Hi L dork, That sounds interesting. Just to clarify my boys skin is really good, nice & healthy. No change in colour. He never did itch nor scratch either. It's just his coat in spots, his rump, pants & slightly through his shoulders. I would love to know what caused it & how to repair it. I am all out of ideas.

My stepson has a rescue Dobe & an Amstaff both looking wonderful on BH. All dogs are different, like us I guess. I brought him a bag to try as I had just started using it & mine were going so well on it in the beginning.

Training In Newcastle/lake Macquarie Area?
BC Crazy replied to thowra's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Quick question Dave, do they have a reactive dog class at Maitland? -
Geez Tara, those symtoms are to familar to just be coincidence aren't they? I can't believe it ! Sounds like your girl had the exact same reaction as my boy. I'm at a loss as to what to do next though to get his coat back on track. He was going well on his new dry food & I saw an immediate improvement, that was a few months ago, but it never went back to its original beautiful condition though. Just lately its looking awful again. Bloody red, coppery & dry. Patchy I give him Showstopper everyday to try & help. Sardines, salmon caps, eggs, & have just swapped him over to 100 % raw diet as I have tried everything I can think of to no real avail. It just upsets me to see him looking so crappy. He didn't have any other symtoms though, no scratching or anything. Just an awful smell & a coat that looks like shite My vet said food intolerance as well. I had his thyroid checked just in case & he was all good. Just wish he looked like he used to. Would love to see some pics of Abbey. I am not computer savvy sorry so am not able to post pics of Sonny. It's just really annoying isn't it when we try our best & get nowhere fast.

How To Become More Interesting
BC Crazy replied to Obi246's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am just about to watch Control Unleashed in the next couple of days. Hope I can get some helpful ideas -
I had both mine on BH & while they both loved it, my boys coat went down hill really quickly. He lost his beautiful shine & it went wiry & dull in some spots & he got a very awful smell about him. I have had trouble ever since trying to get him looking good again. He also gained weight really quickly too, MY girl went ok on it but she drank loads of water, which concerned me. They both do a lot better on Holistic Select, TOTW or Earthborn Holistic. Sonny still has a way to go though with his coat to repair all damage He is doing my head in ATM as I just can't seem to get his coat back to where it was pre BH days. It is still throwing coppery/reddish tones & it's texture in spots, which screams food intolerance to me I agree with you L dork, if they won't tell you what's in BH I wouldn't buy it. I certainly won't use it again with my guys. Just didn't suit either of them.

I have had BC's most of my life & am currently on no. 5 & 6 together. I just adore the breed . I have loved each & everyone of them to bits but in many different ways as they just that, all different. My true heart dog was 2 dogs ago & he was a rescue. I know I will never replace him nor do I want to. Thats what makes him all the more special. You'll know if you listen to your heart when you are ready to get another four legged BF & what breed is entirely a personnal thing. I just love Borders, so I chose to change colours as my heart dog was a red, my 2 atm are traditional, black & white. Maybe that idea may work for you too. Good luck with what ever you choose to do & I am sorry for your loss.

Anxiety And Physical/mental Exercise
BC Crazy replied to kayla1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh yes I understand that now thanks for explaining it. And yes Stella has many overt behaviours She does bark & lunge at other dogs, usually always submissive females only. Most dogs are fine. So it is very unpredictable. If she is off lead she will charge at them barking. Not good So she is mainly on lead now days but she still goes off. I can sometimes with the help of LAT distract her but not 100% of the time as yet. She does calm down a lot quicker though after the stimulus is gone than she used to, almost instantly. Really upsets me though as she gets so loud & angry, then she is just her sweet self in a second. -
Anxiety And Physical/mental Exercise

Interesting post Aidan2. I find Stella's emotional state has improved a great deal. She has always had daily regular exercise but I have added to it, some variety. She is walked for about 7 km's, she also swims for about 15 to 20 mins & we do some basic training & play fetch & tugs daily. I did have a lengthy discussion with my Vet of some 20 years regarding her behaviour & emotional state before I went home to give the hole 'medication road a trial' some serious thought. Decided I would go ahead & just see how she goes. She has been much more relaxed & can get some mush needed rest in the afternoon which just wasn't happening previously. It certainly sparks some pretty serious debate as we can see even on this thread. Can I ask you what you mean by changing overt behaviours can change their emotional state? -

Anxiety And Physical/mental Exercise
BC Crazy replied to kayla1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Nekhbet, I am curious about a couple of comments you have made about anxious dogs. So I have a very anxious young girl & she is at her worst behaviour in our back yard where the slightest noise will set her off her hours, running, whining & barking. So from what you are saying I should have trained that out of her??? Not trying to be a smart a@$e or anything but have I stuffed up? I would be devastated to think that I have caused her anxious behaviour by not training her to relax. I know I have 'a lot' of dog with her & am not skilled up enough to deal with her at times. That's why I read LOTS, trying to get some skills to cope & help her improve. Stella has been very anxious since a 12 week old pup. I have tried to calm her & relax her & it helped to a point but long term she reverts straight back to her anxious ways. I have taught her to lay down & rest, which she does do for up to 10 min now even with distractions. But I set that up when I know she is not aroused by something. If she is upset nothing I do or say effects her. It is like she is totally zoned out & just runs blind if that makes any sense. Like a zombie. I can't reach her mentally to teach her anything. She goes from 0 to 100 in a spilt second. -
Dog Baits At St Thomas Rest Park, Crows Nest (sydney)
BC Crazy replied to Boronia's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes k9angel so true. Many years ago I was walking on our local leash free with my rescue BC & he was very interested in a huge mound of what appeared to be fresh mince very nicely sitting in the surrounding bush. As I investigated closer I noticed this very inviting morsel had a very distinctive "green" fluro, glowing tinge to it I was very upset with my find, bagged it up & dissposed of it. There were 3 others baits found & reported on the same day. What sory of "people" do such a depraved thing. Total waste of oxygen. Shame on them
