Zoos Victoria Train Maremma Bodyguards In Bid To Save Bandicoots
_PL_ replied to silentchild's topic in In The News
It's worth a go and I really hope they succeed. :) Putting a few sheep to hang out with sounds like a good idea. It could be a flop, but things are getting desperate for some of our natives. -
Need Some Behavioural Advice For A Neighbour With New Dog

LG, message Aidan2 about the Good as Gold. He once posted the best explanation of how it works and what else to add. He should be able to work out dose rates. I lost mine long ago -
Need Some Behavioural Advice For A Neighbour With New Dog
_PL_ replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
Little sachet of Good As Gold (horse supplement with tryptophan) is fairly cheap, around $10 for 50gms. Helps with stress. (in addition to other help, I wouldn't just use it without a few other things in place like a crate/box and rewards etc.) -
We need to get our act together.

Sydney - Whose The Rescue That Takes Mums & Bubs?
_PL_ replied to sas's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
NSWAR moved out past Tamworth. And I think TD was on a break after the parvo but she could be back online by now. -
Unlikely, but it doesn't make her any less perfect. :)

Sa Nurse Facing Deregistration Over Bestiality Charges...
_PL_ replied to cannibalgoldfish's topic in In The News
Agree. Jesus... yeh wow .. DOL .. wow The day a dog can speak up then I'll ask them about their opinion on that one. Taking advantage of basic animal instinct and exploiting it for kicks because you can, is exactly why people aren't supposed to molest animals. -
Rspca Katoomba Shelter To Close
_PL_ replied to gillbear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
What on earth are all the local animals supposed to do? Melissa. Do you know..are they going to sell the site or let it rot so nobody else can use it? How do you magically get foster carers in the community...the pets first need a chance to be reclaimed by their owners. -
Rspca Katoomba Shelter To Close
_PL_ replied to gillbear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Same. It would be so good if they found an alternative to closing down -
I don't see any reason to not buy the vet story. What's the point of judging someone when you have no way of knowing the full story anyway. I just have a different opinion to you. And have seen that kind of syncope before in elderly dogs so no, it's not normal and I'm not comfortable watching it .... even if it is a sweet story and even if we're told the dog saw a vet.

Rspca Katoomba Shelter To Close
_PL_ replied to gillbear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Nothing on savetheshelter.com last entry was yesterday. -
I don't buy the vet story. Maybe the vet decided to 'wait and see' but that's different from the dog being OK. Which it seriously isn't. It staggered, fainted, twitched, stopped vocalising and became disoriented.

How arrogant of him.

Depends on the dogs. Depends on their needs. Sometimes pairs go their own way once settled, sometimes complete strangers bond in foster care and you can't split them. It appears by the description that the shelter has staff and trainers who have made the assessment as to what both dogs need and adopters agree to ongoing support which is about as good a setup as you could wish. Without knowing everything, we can't assume they (or anyone) are rehoming as a pair because of some misguided human wanting of fairytale endings. I've noticed people complain more vehemently about it being ridiculous when they actually want one dog and not the other.

How are you going Malty? :)

Yes they tend to mature differently even between sexes, imo. You could still consider a Boxer. :D I'm a new fan of boxers since seeing this the other day http://youtu.be/Hly0vuXPG-M

This might help anyone who takes on the task of helping or educating people rehoming your dog. Honestly, many people still haven't heard of anyone other than the RSPCA or the pound. They believe their pet will die if taken to a shelter or pound so they then take up the task of rehoming privately. Being pushy naturally makes them push back. They also believe that rescue will make money from their pet. Link above is not a completely original work and largely gathered from the internet so cut/paste/copy/alter or whatever you need to do to make it work. Keep it polite and non threatening. :) Just leave my rescue inquiry details and email off the bottom please unless it's my breed specific. Countrygirl. Yes sadly you are right about bogus or unethical rescue. And plenty of money changing hands with no records. Not a lot you can do.

Has he got a friend you could go with at a quiet time? :)

Who Rescued Imp 974 From Gras 26/11/13?
_PL_ replied to JaneyA's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Is he doing what I think he's doing? -
From memory. Not sure if you can do it in VIC but chips are sold in batches. Chip manufacturers can sometimes tell you where the chip (batch) was sold, if it was the breeder's vet who chipped the dog then that's a direct way of having the vet contact them for you. In NSW there is also the chipper's ID but I'm not sure if that gets recorded on the register. edit: yes on my NSW C.A.R. records there is an 'authorised identifier number'. Every chipper has their own.

I think it's been tried :) Maybe I should try a breed specific experiment one day. There's two problems and the first, which I can see isn't exactly what you're suggesting but would be interpreted as such, is that for a dog rescue to advertise that they want free dogs is kind of frowned upon when you've got so many poundies. The ones with no 16D have done it before and it's always looked wrong, the last one turned out to be doing very dodgy things. & One in particular was saying they would take animals you had found so they don't have to go to the pound. That is illegal and plain stupid. A few times it's been tried (and probably still is, by volunteers with enough time) to flood the site with poundies and rescues (and educational stuff about rescue & rehoming) so they compete against the BYB's which is a good idea but you have to keep hammering away constantly. Second problem is that it's exhausting. A trip to Gumtree Crazy Town with no map. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

I know, right. Not blaming you, I get the sh*ts quite easily here sometimes.

(4th Dayd Update)(solved)urgent- Puppy Blood In Poo
_PL_ replied to ka89's topic in General Dog Discussion
ka89 A good vet will run a simple E.L.I.S.A parvo test, ask to see a poo sample, palpate the tummy, listen to the gut sounds, pinch the skin on the pup's neck and check areas such as the gums and eyes. A good vet will explain everything you need to know. They will also explain what they are prescribing and why. You do seem to be a little confused and not aware of what you are looking at or why you are medicating. A good vet doesn't let people walk out of their clinic and have to google the rest of the information. So stop googling. :) It will only worry you. Get a good vet. And Metrogyl is commonly used, it's just that with any medication there is good and bad. For example, when you give a course of anti-biotics it will kill all bacteria (both good and bad), then afterwards it is advised to give pro-biotics to re-establish healthy bacteria that everybody needs. Dolers...any takers for Clarkson 6030 WA Recommended vet needed. -
Wow. Calm down. It's just a DOL thread.
