Reasons Not To Own Your Breed

Oh gosh, where do I start?

Don't get a Husky if:

- You want a dog that obeys you.

- You want a dog that's easy to train.

- You want a dog that you can trust to come back if it gets out.

- You want a dog that won't give you the finger in the middle of a training session.

- You want a dog that will live in harmony with small animals even if its not used to them.

- You don't want a dog that sheds.

Probably stacks more, but they're the ones that have annoyed me lately, and my girl is pretty well trained.

Change Husky to Akita and you're set! In fact, you could probably change that to say don't get a spitz breed if those are your requirements.

Hugo obeys me, was easy to train, I trust him off-leash, he bends over backwards to please me during a training session until I get tired or bored.. Maybe I got a mentally retarded dog because he seriously isn't a pain in the ass that Spitz people keep insisting their dog "group" is just generally like

I would say don't get a Vallhund if you don't want to suffer a stroke every time they bark (which they will LOL, in a very loud, sharp, ear-piercing fashion). Also they shed a hell of a lot. "Moderate shedders" my arse. Can't think of anything else, but I'm particularly biased in thinking that every person should have a Vallhund

Oh, don't get one if you hate the constant thud of tennis balls dropped into your lap, though I haven't a clue if it's like that for all Vallhunds or not.

wow all these different breeds, ow so similar "negative" traits...

Not negative, perhaps just quirky :D

I actually like seeing the quirks of other breeds ... for example I'd never guess a rottie loved lap cuddles!

I didnt know what other word to use since it was a reason to "not" own a breed hahah they all have the same reason to not own them :(

Don't get a papillon if:

You don't want a dog that sheds

You can't be bothered grooming. It's not as much as most people expect but it still requires effort

You want to molly-coddle it and have it think it rules the roost

You don't want a yappy alert dog

You don't watch where you're going in the house and you step on/sit on him/her

You have children who don't understand how fragile they can be

You don't want a dog on an equal intellectual level to you ;)

Halo is like that too, Dju, but I have a feeling she may be the exception rather than the rule! LOL!

Don't get a Border Collie if you want a dog that........

- Doesn't shed.

- Always loves all other dogs.

- Is happy being ignored - for any period.

- Is not going to push you to play endlessly.

- Is easy to train for specific behaviours. I think it is a myth that BC's are easy to train. They are undoubtedly VERY willing workers and that makes them fun to train, but they anticipate and can be quite stubborn. Once they learn the wrong thing it is quite hard to unteach it.

- Is not going to need a LOT of socialisation.

- Is not going to find its own job if you don't have time to give it one.

- Is not going to potentially chase anything that moves.

- Is not going to be happy on its own for extended periods.

- Is happy going for one short walk around the block a couple of times a week.

These don't all apply to every BC, but I've observed them all in one or other of my dogs.

Don't get a Doberman if

* you want a dog that will obey other peoples commands without checking with you first

(including husbands, children etc) :D

* you like having a shower and going to the toilet alone.......

* you want a social butterfly who wants to be everyone's friend.

* you don't like walking/exercising regularly

My Spitz certainly isn't a pain in the ass, doesn't shed (just drops coat twice a year), she gets on with small animals and listens to me most the time. I'm sure many more do too :)

Don't get a Sibe, if you want a peacful nights sleep and don't want to get woken up at 3 in the morning by a dog getting through a hole in the fence that a rabbit couldn't fit through. :D

This hole has been a project for a few days I would think. She did enjoy her splash in the pond though.

Pyrenean Mountain Dogs:

They bark - LOTS

They shed - LOTS

They dont come when called

They can't be let off lead outside of a fenced area (an offlead Pyr is a dis-a-pyr)

If allowed to they will establish a large area as their own - several hundred acres or more - and patrol it.

They are escape artists and shape shifters

They are independent thinkers and definitely don't hang on your every word (that is if they can hear you from where they are anyway)

They dig holes - in our household we call them primary, secondary and tertiary bunkers. You could bury a small car in some of them.

Luckily Pyr breeders are generally pretty good about letting potential owners know about the down sides

(whether potential owners really understand despite these good efforts what they may potentially be in for is another matter.....)

Oh yes. And they take up far too much room on the bed ;)

:D

Just getting my wrists slapped in a thread for pointing out one of the less favourable characteristics of a breed. I'm wondering, to make things a bit less breed specific, if folk have views on what would make their breeds unsuitable for some homes.

Let me start. Don't get a Whippet if:

* You're inclined to throw tantrums at your dogs and get physical when training them. You think raising your voice and jerking them around shows them who's boss? A Whippet will generally neither forgive, nor forget and if you keep it up, the dog will probably shut down and avoid you completely. They are quite sensitive and they sure know how to sulk. If you want to play "Alpha" dog the old way, this breed simply won't cope.

* You have small animals or poultry and you expect that the dog will live in with them 24/7 with no lives at risk. Ah, NO. ETA: Whippets CAN be socialised and live well with cats.. the family cats that is. Others are generally fair game.

* It matters to you that you can walk your dog offlead anywhere and everywhere and your dog will stay by your side or return instantly when called. Yes, Whippets can be trained to recall but when the dog can travel 50 metres before you can yell it's name? Don't stake the dog's life on it. Cars account for a lot of Whippet deaths :(

* Your dog must obey you instantly and in all things. Whippets are hounds. No, 'whats in it for me' factor?.. don't count on it. Want to be the centre of your dog's universe 24/7?? Nope. If this will be a major blow to your ego.. get a Border Collie ;)

* You want your dog to live outside, year round in all weathers and think a wooden floored kennel is fine. Whippets have minimal body fat. That means no insulation and no cushioning. If you're not prepared to provide at least coats and soft bedding and preferably to have the dogs inside, get a different breed.

* You have low fencing and expect the dog to stay home? Most Whippets can jump like stags. Decent high fencing is a must IMO - and even then, some Whippets will be fence jumpers, particularly if left bored and alone.

All pretty much applies to the Saluki (and sighthounds generally) as well.

Don't get a Saluki if..

- you don't want impressive holes dug in the backyard

- you want to leave food out on a kitchen bench without being eaten by a tall, hungry hound

- you want a dog that always greets new people with enthusiasm (mine usually does, but many are more reserved)

- you don't want the dog on the furniture (not just sofas and beds, Salukis love the view from standing on top of tables)

- you don't want to be asked by every other person you run into 'what kind of dog is that?' 'is that a Greyhound?' 'did you clip your Afghan?' why is it so skinny?'

Don't get an Italian greyhound if you cannot deal with a dog that refuses to toilet outside if it's too wet/cold/windy etc

Don't get an Italian greyhound if you want a dog that greets strangers with affection

Don't get an IG if you want to be able to walk your dog offlead

Don't get an IG if you aren't willing to provide warm blankets/jumpers etc etc for your dog. These dogs are completely intolerant of the cold.

Don't get an IG if you can't deal with ppl asking about your 'baby whippet' and/or telling you that your dog is too skinny and needs fattening up.

Don't get an IG if personal space is an issue for ou, wherever you are your IG will want to be with you - right on top of you in fact.

Lastly dont get an IG puppy unless you are prepared for the frenetic energy levels.

Don't get a WL Malinois if you value your sanity.... rofl1.gif

..However, if you are happy to wake up at the crack of dawn to track for hours in the pouring rain, enjoy playing pin cushion on a regular basis and can tolerate that supersonic BARK for the next 15 years or so then they may be worth considering. wink.gif

Tell us how you really feel SK!

Edit: They are a breed I admire from afar (Michael Ellis vids on youtube), with the hope that one day in the distant future I'd have what it takes to own one. Steve makes Venom sound like an angel though...

Love, Love, LOVE herbiggrin.gif Little bit of pain for a hell of a lot of fun. The most awesome little dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing ...even when she is barking her pretty little head off. Wouldn't trade this one for the world
