denali Posted June 5, 2015 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Ok, so a bit of background. My friend overseas emailed me yesterday to tell me a litter had been born from a breeder with lines they love. It is their last litter from that bitch. They lost their previous dog last year at 5yo to brain cancer And with that dog they did obedience and started in agility. But was also a most cherished pet. So new puppy will be ready to come home end July/start of August. However, my friend is going away for a week in September, and for 2-3 weeks in December. So pup would be rather young both times. She hasn't asked yet, but the pup would either stay with its breeder or with one of her dog club friends. So with dog savvy people. The breeder has currently placed a hold on the pup for them while they decide. However, would you get the puppy? or would you wait for another litter somewhere else after the travelling has been done? I personally see arguments from both sides, but if it was me- from a dog i have always admired- i would get it now while i could. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Its not like its a long time away, altho puppies grow quickly (well more so their personalities i mean )and during that early stages of bonding is a special time between the puppy and the owner/s. We didn't even get Miah until she was 10 weeks, so if your friend is getting hers younger, then a couple weeks isn't going make much of a difference. However for me personally if i was that situation i don't think i'd have anyone else look after my puppy unless it was my breeder. Buts that's just how i am, everyone has different feelings about it. I just think if the puppy got sick or injured it might put friends in a uncomfortable position later if something unpredictable should go wrong. But then it could happen at the breeder's place also. We got an email from a breeder saying she knew of a litter ready to go from an oops mating. We were torn as we were due to go overseas in 5 weeks. We spoke to the breeder of the puppies and only as long as they were okay to have the puppy back for 2 weeks, then we would go ahead. I often go and stay at my parents place with my puppy and would have no qualms leaving her with them or her breeder for a week (shes 11weeks old). My family has 6 other dogs all ranging in size and age including another puppy 6weeks older than my girl and they have the best of fun but shes also had to learn to leave my 14yr old Welsh Springer Spaniel alone at sleep time. I feel all great experiences for her even if the training is not as conformed as it is here lol its all a little more relaxedddd at home. BlaznHotAussies Posted June 5, 2015 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Do it!! Puppy will be fine. I got Tundra in the later half of December & we went away for a week in Feb - he was fine! I sent him to my SIL who set me up with him in the first place & he had a fantastic time. Great socialisation for him - she put him in with each of her dogs & they got along well :) also good for him to get used to different places, the kids, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
