  1. I have people looking at me funny wondering why I gave my son Malcolm the middle name Dog.
  2. What everyone has said above. But also, be sure you get the right formula. It may be that brand substitutions or certain brands aren’t ok due to the preparation. And sometimes vets want you to stick with the same brand/generic/chemist if the medication is carefully titrated (e.g. anxiety medication especially for tiny dogs). Anyway, here are some online pharmacies: https://www.theanimalpharmacy.com.au/ https://www.petceutics.com.au/ https://petchemist.com.au/
  3. Not a video, but get yourself the Through A Dog’s Ear albums. The ones by Lisa Spector and Joshua Leeds. They really work! Follow the instructions for use. They are on iTunes, eBay, or you can buy from Polite Paws Online Store. Polite Paws also have the units that come preloaded with hours of music rather than purchasing them separately. https://icalmpet.com/ https://www.politepaws.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=142_146&zenid=i9ohgk0eoo21jdas7gdj625dp7 Are you getting help for your anxious dog too?

  5. Gorgeous photos and story! Malcolm knows all about Christmas but Gotcha/birth days seem less distinguishable. Perhaps I need to step up my game by bringing in a pot plant and putting presents under it for a week prior.
  6. If it is a consideration, Pet Plan are the only ones to my knowledge who will cover mental illness. Last I checked, PIA specifically exclude it.
  7. Not the cup, @Scottsmum, not the cup! and again, top marks for baby calming cap.
  8. Filtabac practically glued itself to my dog and had to be shaved and peeled off him. Did your vet recommend it? Maybe they have other suggestions?
  9. Definitely tick central in south coast and not worth the risk of no protection IMO. The thing to remember about advantix is that it needs to be applied every 2 weeks for ticks. Your current vet or new vet may have a recommendation for your dog. Remember too that it’s a bit of a puzzle to be put together with intestinal worms, heartworm, fleas. What product you select for some of these things may affect your choices for another.
  10. Do they still have to be on-leash when in public areas without a muzzle, or is that just a NSW thing?
  11. Malcolm isn’t a huge fan of his snuggle safe as it is a very hard disc, so I put it in with him for radiant heat in a place where it won’t offend his sensibilities.
  12. If you are concerned about the surgery/hospital stay being traumatic, consider a clinic with Fear Free certified professionals. https://fearfreepets.com/fear-free-directory?zoom=12&is_mile=1&directory_radius=100&filter=1&field_role=Veterinarian&field_role=&directory_radius=100&address=Victoria+australia
  13. In the US they even fly in rescue dogs from other countries. I’m not going to begrudge a legitimate rescue situation, but it seems like they must be flush with money if they can do that?
  14. Haven’t some rescues in Aus been discovered breeding puppies to sell? I swear it has been reported in the past.
  15. It is illegal, Zena’s mum. The OP is lucky they haven’t been fined and/or slapped with a nuisance dog order (or worse). The fines aren’t cheap either - up to $1,650. https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/public/dogs-and-cats/information-for-the-community/nuisance-dogs-and-cats-including-barking
  16. Do you live with your sister? My dog who is 12 has never met my parents’ dog who is 2. My dog has an anxiety disorder and is scared of dogs, so it’s not in his best interest to have to endure the stress of being around my parents’ dog. And the same goes for my parents’ dog, especially when he was a puppy, as puppies have precious brains that need lots of positive experiences with the world around them. So my advice from the owner of one scared dog to another is please don’t force it. If you live together, use baby gates, pens, crates etc to keep them separate while you get help from a positive dog trainer. If not, leave them be. My mum would love our dogs to meet, but I have to put my dog’s wellbeing ahead of human wishes.
  17. SO, GETTING BACK ON TOPIC... I wonder if it might help to state what the adoption fee is including at a fraction of the price. Something along the lines of: Fido’s adoption fee of $x comes with the following inclusions (or includes the following, or helps cover the follow, etc): Full vet exam Desexing Dental scale, polish and extractions under anaesthsia Heartworm test C3 or C5 vaccination (whatever you do) Microchipping Lifetime registration (or whatever is applicable in your state) Flea, tick, intestinal and heartworm treated ... and anything else you do. State it from the outset in a huge list and maybe it would help people better appreciate the adoption fee? And no, you are not too strict.
  18. Hi Gau, I use Dentipet and a baby toothbrush for my small dog. My dog loves the chicken flavour. However, that ‘dog breath’ could well be the smell of pus and infection, as a healthy mouth should not smell unless they’ve recently eaten something gross. So if you haven’t recently, I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for a dental check. He may require a dental/oral treatment under general anaesthesia before you start a tooth brushing program. PS this is my favourite video for teaching cooperative tooth brushing.
  19. Milbemax and Advantix will cover everything, but tick coverage will only last 2-weeks.
