  1. That is an interesting way Sheena
  2. I remember and always think about him when I see stuff about puppy farms. I am glad he is doing well and living the life he deserves.
  3. Well I was and you quoted me so you are the rude one. Giving someone shit about feeding a very ill dog, disgraceful
  4. I honestly don't think the dog's preference is a very good indicator as quite like us humans, they'll go for good flavours first and have no knowledge of what is "best" for them. Mine would happily eat all the chocolate and lollies if given the chance, he'd probably even choose them over raw meat. Sugars and fats are rich in energy and an opportunistic carnivore will jump the chance to eat anything containing high levels of them. Plus smell is a huge factor too. I know what would be eaten first  I honestly don't think the dog's preference is a very good indicator as quite like us humans, they'll go for good flavours first and have no knowledge of what is "best" for them. Umm you have obviously never seen the Hills L/D. You are all so totally off the mark it is just not even funny. It is soy based and has zero meaty smell. It is nothing like any other tinned dog food I have ever seen. So nothing like Maccies. *eyeroll man* Do you think I want to be forking out a fortune for this food? Like to see what you do when you have to deal with a dog in palliative care.
  5. Not sure dog food marketing can be blamed for it. We are doing it ourselves! I don't see too many adverts for Artemis, BARF etc. I was pretty snobby about dog food until I had to feed Amber what I considered to be the worst dog food ever. Interestingly I gave her a small chicken neck last night with the worst dog food and she scarfed the dog food first. I've always worried if she is secretly thinking 'what is this crap you are feeding me' but she does seem to prefer it.
  6. Looks like it is owned by a US company called Nootie.
  7. Yes to this. This is how my sister 'broke into' breeding. She did all her studies, passed her exams and then asked a breeder who had helped mentor her through the paperwork if she would be willing to let her co-own a bitch. She showed her for 3.5 years, then the breeder wanted to breed the bitch. Sis took care of everything and as a reward, was asked if she'd like a show quality pup from the litter for her very own. She put in years of hard work not just paper educating but getting to know the breeders and judges, taking care of a dog that could be removed from her at any time if Sis didn't prove her stuff. Breeding is a lifetime thing, you've got to be prepared to put in the hard yards. lol I actually think this whole proving yourself for years is idiotic. But sometimes you have to play the game. I also start feeling really old as I think about the good old days and my experience as a first time breeder. All I got was amazing support and I had never even stepped foot in a show ring. I did obedience instead. I actually feel sorry for newbies now that think it might be nice to have a litter or two.
  8. Might be better to not mention breeding at all but say you want to show. You will probably have to get a pup on co-ownership. In a couple of years time if the bitch is nice then you can think about breeding. You are sort of putting the cart before the horse a bit asking for a puppy to breed with. I've got 2 bitches on mains register and wouldn't breed with either of them.
  9. Since watching this morning I have been craving spaghetti all day!! Am now going to make some for dinner and the dogs aren't having any of it!
  10. If he listens to the 'uh uh' but not the napalm voice I would check that the napalm voice is suitably low pitched. Ladies tend to get high pitched which dogs think is fun.
  11. Really? But it has a happy ending! I am sooooo besotted with that guy! Swoon.
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAsjRRMMg_Q
  13. Is the breeder close enough to come out and help?
  14. They have found a cat!! Just saw him on The Project. Looks in a bad way but is alive. A cat called Merlin.
  15. Very sorry pirate. Hopefully the op will be successful.
  16. What tests is Bob having done? If there is a single shunt then surgery is often a good option and the dog goes on to live a fairly normal life. The surgery is not without risks though. If the condition is not operable then you are in a palliative situation just trying to keep the dog as healthy and comfortable as possible. The dog's life span is often quite dramatically reduced but my dog was only given 6 months to live and that was 4 years ago so there is always hope. Diet - the dog must have a diet that does not stress the liver, this means easily digested protein. Eggs & soy are easier to digest for instance than meat. Often the dog also needs a low purine diet and low sodium. I feed prescription feeds. There are also medications that might be needed like metrogyl, which helps with the toxins that can gather in the blood due to the liver not working properly. There are other supplements that can also help like SAMe, St Mary's thistle, lactulose. A warning signs that things are going down hill would be the dog pressing its head into a wall, having a fit, walking with very stiff legs, staring into space. These are all happen when the toxins build up in the brain. Banging into walls is part of this. It is called hepatic encephalopathy. Dogs with liver problems tend to be smaller and are often skinny. They tend to be fussy eaters and some will vomit after eating. You also need to avoid putting chemicals in the dog. So worming and vaccinations need to be avoided as much as possible. A lot of medications are processed through the liver so care needs to be taken there. General anesthetic can also be a problem.
  17. Yes I have a dog with multiple liver shunts. What would you like to know?
  18. But I would want to know what the meal is. So want to see 'lamb meal' not 'meat meal'.
  19. R.I.P. beautiful Ness Condolences human Ness & family.
  20. Cute! Which lake is that? My first border was hilarious when he discovered water. I couldn't get him out! He didn't swim much though just lay in the water like a hippo.
  21. I didn't want to comment because you were going to see Nek but I would have suggested what she did. Put him into boot camp. NILIF. I would even consider treating him like a working dog ie crate when not doing something with him. If mine are shitting me off I will call them and then make them sit, drop, stand etc I let them know if I don't appreciate behavior. To be honest I think he is going to be tricky to rehome unless you can find a agilty/flyball home or someone who likes a challenge. He doesn't sound like he is going to make a good pet.
  22. Interesting, is it the turkey one? I couldn't get any of my cats to eat Wellness for love or money  Duck and Oatmeal. Yeah the normal Wellness wasn't super well received. I can usually tell if Poppy really loves the food as good food gets drools  Natures Gift kibble is a fav!
