  1. Also keep in mind what your right hand is doing while you are placing the rear feet with your left hand. She could just be following your right hand backwards as you move. Have you tried getting her to walk backwards so the back feet are where you want them and then just placing the front feet?
  2. They are also known as the 'Ormskirk Heeler' as that was the market town where they developed (only 10 miles from where I live!). They are prone to eye problems (think it is PRA), it was a breeder of them I met at the eye vets who told me this. Come in black/tan and brown/tan. In the UK they are in the pastoral group
  3. For now forget about messing with the back feet and encorage her to move her weight forward - tasty treats or teach hand touching so the dog will pull themselves forward. keep training sessions very short and have a good game or something fun straight after it. What breed? Is this a large breed or table dog?
  4. I wouldn't leave any collar on a dog, especially one that can tighten up so easily. If you must leave a collar on, look up 'break away collars' which are much safer to use. You can also do a search of this forum for dogs that have choked to death with a collar left on.
  5. sounds to me the main issue was them realising how long they would have to leave the pup alone during the day while they work, so they did the responcible thing and took him back
  6. As I asked about this challenge to begin I now appologise for the lateness of my arrival. Here are the first three days. My contorted willow My elderly Giant Schnauzer caught hugging up with a toy, next to the warm radiator Ice on the pond at the dunes
  7. the strong smell with a healthy dog is often because they have held on for longer then normal. Are you sure she is weeing like normal?
  8. i find the styptic powder/pens have gone off by the time I need them, I just use a bar of soap scrape the nail across it and the soap will plug the nail.
  9. I enjoyed those photos, got anymore?
  10. Good news! Glad you have found something to help. Thanks for your comments on the dogs!
  11. As the dog is going into the dam everyday, will the owners keep the dog brushed or would it really be better off clipped short to suit his lifestyle?
  12. interesting read, I've also seen a few dogs who have feet like this (worse!) interesting to know it is easily treatable.
  13. Hope all goes well with this girl and she grows up to be a special surprise!
  14. We have the neighbours letting of a load atm - why when it isn't even 6.30pm yet. Oh the joys of a pack of dogs barking at the top of their voices at each bang!
  15. yay! Now I just need to come up with the inspiration of what to take when it is snowy, rainy, cold and horrid outside!
  16. I thought you had an angel! Have you got a theme for mums litters?
  17. Try a lower value treat. What are you using to lure her? It maybe a little to exciting for her at the moment and overriding any concentration.
  18. I've done this in the kitchen, along the line of cupboards, easy to teach if you have taught hand touching/touch stick, so the dog will follow your hand, you can then also teach the dog to work away from your leg and build in spins etc to keep him guessing about what you are going to ask him next while 'at heel' Just watch where the backend is going as you reverse against a wall, sometimes a dog can move the backend behind your feet.
  19. my two surprised are called 'Surprise Angel' and 'Miracle Angel' went with the angel theme as that is mums knickname. Congrats on your two surprise bundles, photos??
  20. Standards are the most stubborn and dominant of the 3 sizes of schnauzer and take a strong owner to be a successful leader. They do well having plenty of exercise and mental work as they get older, while young and growing you should be doing lots of small training sessions (eg each time you boil the kettle, practise a few sits/downs etc and build up a little repertoire) look at finding a good training school they will take you further then the basics. Mouthing I would discourage as much as the biting, as no one likes a mouthy dog, especially one they don't know. Get the pup used to being handled all over while calm, it will help with grooming trips and vets. How did you introduce the crate to your pup? Pup should get used to you being apart in a gradual manner, starting when pup is feeling tired remove the bedding during the day and go back to basics with toilet training, could be he is still a little unsure about it and it trying to hide it. All dpogs like manure, it's a favourite treat for them. Dig it into the soil or fence it off as it ain't going to stop snacking on it if he can get to it.
  21. yay! thanks Ash, I was worried you'd be getting sick of it all by now.
  22. It's just a fujifilm finepix F200exr, I'm still saving up for a DSLR! One day other things will stop stealing the money out of the pot! But this camera does have the option of manual controls which I need to read up about a bit first.
