Ashanali
Poor boy. I hope he recovers rapidly *no ratsac here either. Good quality traps are the more humane and safer option. Edited January 30, 2010 by Ashanali
OSoSwift
Did they do his PCV at all? Try and keep him as still as possible - he does look like such a sweet old fellow. A hard lesson learnt for his owner!

all that glitters
Most likely he should be in a vet on a drip, I'm surprised the vet let him leave. Maybe it's not as bad as my experience but I don't like the sound of it.My IG was given ratsac by a malicious neighbour a few years ago and he spent a weekend in an emergency vet on a drip and had to then go to the specialist centre for 2 weeks, it was touch and go as to whether he'd survive. Then he came home and was on Vit K for 2 months at intervals of every few hours - my neighbours had to help me. Incredible :D :D I hope Reg turns out OK!! The thought of a dog just lying next to me bleeding is so scary!

Kelly_Louise
Oh goodness, how awful. You've done a great job, I'm sure I would be in a state of panic if I saw my (or any) dog bleeding in such a way. Can't be good. Best wishes that the grand old boy starts to improve soon, and that he makes it through.
persephone
Hopefully he'll hang on until his mum gets there.... at least he won't be feeling too much pain- and hopefully the drugs will slow things ...I don't think I would be as strong as you and sit there with him :D May I suggest you call the vet? Ask about response times etc... (remembering lifting him/getting him in the car will break down more capiliaries etc :D )

A hard lesson learnt for his owner! Not thaT i know of. Im so drained from the day. Hes still bleeding, anyone got any idea how long it should take to stop?? He is lying quietly on the lounge His owner is devastated and blaming herself.. To take his PCV they would of had to draw a small amount of blood then spin it in a StatSpin or similar machine, seperates the blood cells so you can see how many red ones. From memory around 15 to 18 is transfusable level, around 30ish is normal. I would consider ringing your vet, if he has had a resonable dose of Ratsack he will quite likley still bleed. The problem is he may run out and be needing a transfusion. There can be lethal doses of Ratsack that do not respond regardless of treatment(not what you are wanting to hear I am sure - but it is possible!) I would be calling the vet to see what next and asking about transfusions. If he has never had one before he doesn't need to be cross matched, if you have a reasonable sized dog yourself(the bigger the better) then you could use your dog as a donor dog. The main problem in country practices is being able to have access to dogs for donated blood. When I had my Rotti she saved 4 lives over time due to her blood donations. Good luck and lots of very gentle healing hugs for the beautiful boy
