julzjc Posted October 2, 2010 Author Share Posted October 2, 2010 Sorry I havent been online. We lost a friend to cancer last night. The last two weeks have been hell. So far so good-ish. Indie seems normal so far but Bonnie is very lethargic. Her gums are a very light salmon colour now (usually bright red). She is drinking gallons of water but is still eating ok, she wont play (usually she is flat chat doing zoomies and wrestling in the yard), only wants to sleep on the sofa or sunbake in the grass. She is so quiet. I think Bonnie must have eaten most/all of it as Indie is only 20kg whilst Bon is 25kg so surely he would have been affected sooner. My poor girl. After talking to the manufacturer of the bait, they said it would take 7-10days for the symtoms(bleeding) to appear, so we will know by Wednesday how they are coping. With all your positive stories and prayers I have so much hope that they may pull through this. My poor OH is still kicking himself everytime he looks at them. Needless to say the bait went straight into the outside bin and will never be near our house again. Im acting normal on the outside, just gutted on in the inside, I dont want my emotions to rub off on the kids and the dogs. Kids are already asking me why the dogs have to take tablets daily and why Bonnie wont play with them, I just said they have sore tummys and hopefully the tablets will make them feel better. Taking oh so many photos of my beautiful pups just incase the worst happens. Thankyou so much for all your kind words and for the candles, they are lovely. Julzjc Tomorrow is the beginning of a much better week for you,it never rains it always "pours" when there is strife.Sorry about your friend. Julz, Indie & Bonnie should be kept quiet as they are,with the lethargy being another sympton,I was wondering if you can add Glucose to the drinking water......so she doesn't feel so flat. However they should not haemorrhage if they are on Vitamin K. Yes, a PCV is a good idea. I'd take both dogs in. Don't let the kids to try to engage the dogs in play. The more activity the greater the chance of capillary rupture and you don't want that. Keep them as quiet as you possibly can. Crate them if necessary. My dog was lethargic when he was on Vit K. He wasn't interested in doing much except eating and sleeping. The bait my boy ate was Brodificoum which is a second generation rat bait and as potent as all hell. During the storm some of my neighbours garden soil with green pellets in it washed under the fence as well as the packet being blown in by the strong wind so at least I knew where the rat bait came from and was able to ask him what kind of poison it was. Knowing what it was gave the vet a heads up. I think you got them to the vet on time and hopefully all will be well. This is such an awful thing to go through, my thoughts are with you. Im going to give her a few hours to see if she deteriorates and Ill take her in. Hoping the more she rests, the more she will recover. She will still get up and walk around (if she hears food) and go outside to toilet but not interested in anything but sleeping. Is there anything I can give ie the glucose in her water to give her some energy? Extra iron? My vet said of all the cases they had this year(alot), they havent managed to save a single dog yet and has prepared me for the worst but with everything said here and the Vit K, why couldnt they save any? (Retorical question) He did say they could try the drip and blood transfusion but I dont understand how none have survived with all that treatment and all of these positive stories. julzjc Posted October 2, 2010 Author Share Posted October 2, 2010 Ive told the kids to leave them alone to sleep and everyone is fine with that, although my 2yr old wants to sleep with Bonnie so Ive moved her behind my back(or let her in my bedroom) so he cant cuddle her. They just arent used to going outside with Bonnie not pushing toys into their hands to engage them in play and following them around like a shadow. They know something is wrong with her. As for why no others have been saved by your vets this year, without knowing their cicrumstances, perhaps it was because they were not taken to a vet until they displayed symptoms, and not in a preemptive strike like you did as soon as you realised there was a chance they had fully ingested all the poison, by which time it sounds like it would be way too late - anyway here's hoping that you will break the drought for your vet and be two success stories for him Edited October 2, 2010 by Linda K Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Roguedog Posted October 2, 2010 Share Posted October 2, 2010 Keep your chin up, we have had three cases this year that I have been involved in and we only lost one, she was a very old girl and only presented to the clinic when the symptoms started to show.... you got onto it early so keep positive, the more you stress out, the more Bonnie and Indie will too... Staff'n'Toller Posted October 2, 2010 Share Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) What dose rate of Vit K are you giving? I'm assuming they're the big white tablets that look like smarties? It would be worth asking if he actually has a centrifuge (the machine they use to spin down blood) if he doesn't then specialist centre care is required- particularly if you need to do blood or plasma transfusions. PCV measurements need to be done several times a day and you need to have that machine in house to do it- you don't want to have to be sending it off to the lab and waiting 12 hours. After the first transfusion your dog's blood needs to be typed so they can crossmatch and use the correct blood, it lessens the chance of transfusion reactions, perhaps he is getting transfusion reactions and losing dogs that way? Transfusion reactions are very serious. Saying that my girlie had one before major surgery and was perfectly fine.
