Loving my Oldies Posted February 23, 2014 Share Posted February 23, 2014 The only reason I know it's that breed is because I frequent dog shows and have shown my small dog for a little while. Hence the knowledge of dog breeds. I do apologise if I've offended anyone by mentioning pitbull specific and if I may have put a strong stereotype in my first post. You should not be the one apologising, toy_poodle . If you've read even a few of the dog attack threads on DOL, you will quickly learn that to some people the victims (human and animal) are the last thing of interest. The most important thing is whether the attacking dog has been properly identified and pity help anyone who suggests that the dog could have been a staffy or a pitbull or crosses thereof. You and your little dog have been through a deeply traumatising experience and from the look of those horrific injuries your little dog was lucky to survive. You have every right to be very angry. It's messy and can be hard to keep a bandage on but it did wonders for one of greyhounds who had over 100 stitches and a very large amount of skin die. I am so sorry this happened to you and I can't believe how irresponsible the owner was to just leave you and your injured dog. I hope your little one recovers quickly. Even in an off leash area the law is that he must have effective voice control over his dogs... Dog attacks can happen with all breeds, just today I was rushed by a large oodle cross thing at the on-leash park, the dog was off leash of course and came blasting over all the way from the other end of the park as soon as it saw my dog.. the owner had absolutely no control or recall and wouldn't even call his dog until me and several passersby yelled repeatedly at him to call it, and of course it didn't recall... Luckily me and my dog were not hurt, but you obviously were not so lucky... I hope the council can find the man and his dogs that did this to yours, I am so sick of irresponsible dog owners who don't follow the law. There have been some similar types in the past, someone even posted a test type post to see the reactions that they got and 'fessed up later in the thread. So I wouldn't be too harsh on people. See I had the opposite thoughts myself, I thought wow this member joined 5 years ago and this is their first post this is bad. I'm so sorry that this happened to your little one, I don't go to dog parks as I have greyhounds the only breed muzzled by law. Having said that when you own the fastest dog on the planet for some of them it's not a bad call, my own Maddie for one. I hope you both heal and don't let the negative comments get to you. Witnessing it happen i thought I was going to loose her. Am very proud of all that she went through n she's been very tough. Thanks for the Manuka honey tip! Will definitely use it! As for joining years ago, I registered to dogz online looking for a toy poodle breeder hence the name toy poodle crazy. Seeing that this forum has so many passionate dog lovers is amazing. Amax-1 Posted February 23, 2014 Share Posted February 23, 2014 While I feel immensely sorry for the original posters dog and it really angers me when people have out of control or aggressive dogs in public (or in general really), I don't really like how people seem to describe every dog involved in an attack as a pitbull. A "pitbull" (according to bystanders) bit another dog at our dog park a few weeks ago... it was a Staffy cross in reality. Just further perpetuates the stereotypes about breeds and seems to shift blame to the dog's breed rather than it's lousy owner who doesn't socialise, train or take responsibility for their pet. Most people I know couldn't get http://www.pickthepit.com/ when I showed them (or assumed 3/4 of the dogs were pitbulls). Just my $0.02 though. I think the term "Pitbull" applies in many cases to a Bull breed of some description that acts with strong aggression, but I don't think if the dog in this case looked like a GSD, the OP or anyone else would report it as a Pitbull?. Many dogs of all different breeds can possess serious dog aggression, but unfortunately it's often dog aggressive Bull breeds that the owners don't keep under effective control the most for some reason? After battling, to get this dog seperated from our female, the young, trendy, longhaired, Greek Canberra coward owner yelled abuse, and ran away, leaving us with the injured pet/trying to find a vet on a public holiday. For people that are not aware Ruffey Lake Park is a very big park with a large portion of it being off leash, it's not only frequented by people near by but some people will drive from other councils to the park so the person in question could live anywhere. My first time there I had a standard poodle put it's mouth around Sarah's neck, it wasn't aggressive but clearly didn't know how to behave around smaller dogs - the owner was pretty useless trying to call her dogs away as well and we haven't been back since. If anything this post acts as a reminder for people who's dogs are attacked to get the details of the other dogs owner, it's an easy thing to forget when your shocked and worried but like bush fire prevention if it happens make sure you have a plan because you're not likely to be thinking clearly Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

hankdog Posted February 23, 2014 Share Posted February 23, 2014 I'm sorry for your dog but take heart my little pekin chicken was attacked 2 years ago and had four tubes like that sticking out of her. She successfully overcame gangrene and regrew most if her feathers. Modern medicine can work miracles. The skin on top if where that drain is might die off and form a sort of scabby shell, if it's bothering her you might need to have a kong cloud or the old cone of shame ready to pop on her. I own a bull breed who is dog aggressive and I am on the other side of the same fence I guess, I hate off leash dogs because of the danger they pose if they run up and get attacked and then I will be to blame. The truth is their are a lot of bull breed dogs out there and there are many careless owners who don't leash or train their dogs. When one of these owners chooses a bull breed looking dog the consequences are going to be worse than if they chose a poodle. It would be great if instead of a breed restriction we could have a "too stupid to manage a dog" restriction slapped on the owners but that's not going to happen. Whilst I loved dog parks when I had a calm dog I now wish that there were no leash free areas because I think they might encourage people to just think dogs gambolling free is the norm and their right rather than a special privilege accorded only to bomb proof dogs in certain areas. So yes as a bull breed owner I flinch when I see pit bulls again blamed for attacking but statistically it is likely. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
